Ledyard Weather Center

Ledyard Weather Center is located in the suburban, rural community of Ledyard in southeastern CT (LAT: 41.2 N  LONG: 71.6 W).  The surrounding towns include, Groton, Mystic, Norwich, and Stonington.  We are 5 miles north of Fishers Island Sound and Long Island Sound at an altitude of 250 feet.  Freestanding weather stations are located in a semi-wooded residential lot.

The primary weather station is a Texas Weather Instruments WRL-32 with a Davis Weather Monitor II as backup station.  A 4 inch diameter volumetric rain gauge is used to verify tipping bucket results.  Information from the TWI console is sent to a 350 MHz Pentium II computer where WeatherView32 software collects, analyzes and displays the data.  Data is uploaded to the Internet at least once an hour but more often twice hourly.  Data is also sent to the Weather Underground.

Lightning data is obtained using a Boltek Storm Tracker and Lightning/2000 software.  The antenna is located in within the attic of a two-story home.  The data is collected and analyzed on a custom 1GHz Pentium III computer.  Data is uploaded to the Internet twice hourly.

The weather stations collect the following data:  Outside and inside temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, rainfall, and barometric pressure (inside).  Dew point, wind chill and heat index are calculated.
